Call for Expression of Interest: 2019 West Africa Cultural Immersion Program (WACIP) Benin Republic (First Batch)

Applications are now open for young people interested in participating in our forthcoming Cultural Immersion program to Benin Republic from Sunday 5th May to Friday 10th May 2019.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVE
The theme for the 2019 West Africa Cultural Immersion Program is ‘Language for Economic Advantage LEAD’. The immersion is meant to enhance the intercultural competence of the participants towards strengthening their multilingual skills for promotion of trade, humanitarian assistance and sustainable development in Africa.

LEARNING CONTENT
In March 2018, 54 Member States of the African Union signed the Continental Free Trade Agreement (CfTA) towards promoting trade in Africa through ease of movement of goods, services, investments and business persons. For CfTA to really achieve its objective, the multilingual diversity of Africa must be put into consideration. More than 220 million people speaks French all over the world which makes it second most widely learned language after English and sixth most spoken language in the world.

Through this immersion, we hope to strengthen the intercultural competence of our participants towards harnessing their French bilingual skills for maximizing economic opportunities within the West Africa region.

During the immersion,  participants will do a comparative study of market and trade mechanism between Benin Republic and Nigeria with prior attention of pricing and regional trade policy. This will be enhanced through visit to key market in Cotonou and Port Novo as well as other Africa Regional Organizations of the International Trade Union Confederation.

Other learning visits to be made will include visit to Institut Français du Bénin, Embassy of Nigeria in Cotonou, Chinese Cultural Centre, National Assembly in Port Novo, SOS Children Village Abomey-Calavi, and Shangai Farm Port Novo. There will also be other fun activities to include trip to the beach, movie night and football match between members and staff of host youth-led organization and LAHD participants/BNI staff.

The ‘7 Day’ Cultural immersion promises to be more than learning but also full of fun. 2018 participants shared their cultural immersion experience in this video 2018 Cultural Immersion to Benin Republic
